The Challenge
The traditional way of Generation 1 Wheel Bearing Installation requires the installer to remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle, remove the snap ring, press the wheel hub out of the bearing with specialized equipment in order to prevent damage to the steering knuckle, and then press the old wheel bearing out of the knuckle. After that perform appropriate inspection and clean-up of any debris, burrs or nicks on the knuckle and seating surface for the new bearing which can be time consuming. Finally, press the new wheel bearing into the steering knuckle and set up for the rest of the installation.
As there are a number of things to watch for, failure to do so increases the chances of damaging the bearing or the steering knuckle. Accumulated rust and debris on the original parts can largely increase the repair time and difficulty.
